How to Use Screen Time on your iPhone

In iOS 12 the Digital Health was the focal point of the Update, therefore, it developed a new section in settings called Screen Time. Screen Time helps you keep track of how you use your phone.

With Screen time you will know how much you are using your phone, which App is being used most, which one is sending more notifications and similar details.

How to Access Screen Time

To access screen time simply follow the steps given below:

  1. Go into the Settings in your iPhone
  2. Scroll down the Settings menu to find Screen Time right underneath the Do Not Disturb option. Tap on Screen Time
  3. Here you’ll get a quick look at your Screen Time Dashboard and sub-sections below.
  4. At the top, you will see a list of the compatible device mentioned, tap on it to see the various reports for screen time. Here you can find out which Apps are taking most of the screen time and how many times your phone is picked up in an hour or a day also how many notifications you’re getting in a day and which Apps are sending most notifications.

You can even schedule downtime for screen time.

How to Schedule Downtime for Screen Time

  1. Go to Settings in your iPhone
  2. Scroll down the Settings menu to find Screen Time right underneath the Do Not Disturb option. Tap on Screen Time
  3. In Screen Time sub-sections, you will find a Downtime option, tap on it
  4. In the Downtime section, create a specific password.
  5. Now you will be able to toggle on the Downtime and schedule it accordingly.

You can also add App limits for specific Apps.

How to add App limits for specific Apps in Screen Time

It is pretty simple to add limits to the usage of a certain App. You can do it by following the steps given below:

  1. Go to Settings in your iPhone
  2. Scroll down the Settings menu to find Screen Time right underneath the Do Not Disturb option. Tap on Screen Time
  3. In Screen Time sub-sections, you will find an App Limits option
  4. Categories are available in which you can add limits to the usage of Apps like games, entertainment, etc
  5. Unfortunately, you cannot specifically put a limit to a specific app in these categories, to do so go to the most used apps in screen time and tapping the hourglass right beside the App name. From here you can put a limit to the amount of you would like to use the App.

How to Always Allow Apps in Screen Time

There is a section in Screen Time called Always Allowed which lets you choose Apps that will always be available for use even when the Screen Time is enabled. By default, it has Phone, Messages and FaceTime App allowed. To use this option, follow the steps given below:

  1. Go to Settings in your iPhone
  2. Scroll down the Settings menu to find Screen Time right underneath the Do Not Disturb option. Tap on Screen Time
  3. In Screen Time sub-sections, tap on Always Allowed option
  4. There you can add Apps which you want to be used anytime even when Screen Time is enabled. Tap on the + icon given on the left side of App name to add it to the Always Allowed list.

Content & Privacy Restriction is the most important section of Screen Time. It lets you restrict viewing inappropriate stuff and making unwanted purchases. This could be really useful for users with kids. From here you can enable various settings for iTunes and App store purchases.
