To set up the YouTube-DL on Debian, you need to use YouTube-DL GUI DEB package to the computer and install using dpkg. Debian 10 users should grab Ubuntu 18.04 LTS Bionic release whereas the Debian 9 users should download the Ubuntu 16.04 LTS Xenial one.

The Debian 8 users cannot use YouTube-DL GUI so to use it you must have Debian 9 or 10.

For Debian 10


sudo dpkg -i youtube-dlg_0.4-1~webupd8~bionic9_all.deb

sudo apt-get install -f

For Debian 9


sudo dpkg -i youtube-dlg_0.4-1~webupd8~xenial4_all.deb

sudo apt-get install -f

Installing YouTube-DL GUI on Arch Linux

For the Arch Linux users, the AUR package is there, directly installing the version is better instead of using Flatpak or Snap.

Use Pacman command to grab the packages.

sudo pacman -S base-devel git

Now use the git clone command to download the Trizen Aur Helper, it will get the dependencies and makes it quicker.

git clone

cd trizen

makepkg -sri

The Tizen application can install the YouTube-DL GUI app on Arch Linux.

trizen -S youtube-dl-gui-git

Installing YouTube-DL GUI on Fedora

Fedora Linux does not support YouTube-DL GUI from the developers. You need to install it from the Python package installer. All you need is to follow a few simple steps to get it working.

Open the terminal and use Python PIP to get YouTube-DL. Before that make sure that you must have Python Pip on Fedora for this to work. More info here.

Installing YouTube on OpenSUSE

To install YouTube-DL GUI on OpenSUSE, open the OBS page and find the version of OpenSUSE, click on “1-Click install” button to start.

Save YouTube videos with YouTube-DL GUI

Most of the users want to grab the audio from the YouTube videos for playing on any portable device. YouTube-DL provides an intuitive user interface guides you to download any media file. The Audio tab allows downloading the YouTube videos as MP3 just by placing the link and clicking on the cloud button.

The options in the menu allow the users to choose the codec by placing the video link and set the drop down to the video format you want to save it to. Clicking the cloud button will save the videos.
